Newark, NJ – A Newark police officer, New Jersey, was killed and another was injured in a shooting on Friday night, authorities said.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed in an email to Associated Press that two Newark police officers were shot around 6:37 pm in the Broadway and Carteret area.
The officers were taken to the University Hospital in Newark and one was seriously injured, the office said, and said the shooting is still under investigation.
The officers were shot in the fulfillment of duty, said Robert W. Fox, president of the Police-New Jersey State Lodge, in a statement published on Facebook.
“An officer has made the last sacrifice, and the other is receiving treatment for his wounds at the time of this launch,” the statement said.
