Cannes, France – Cannes, France (AP) – Robert de Niro He will receive an honorary gold palm at the Cannes Film Festival, a culmination of the 81 -year -old actor whose history with the French Film Festival extends for half a century.
In 1976, De Niro starred in two films: Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi driver” and the “1900” by Bernardo Bertolucci, which premiered in the competition in Cannes. “Taxi driver” was an immediate sensation, and went home with the festival’s main prize, La Palma d’Or.
Since then, De Niro has been a regular in the Croisette, returning with “The King of Comedy” in 1983, “Once Unone to Time in America” by Sergio Leone in 1984 and “The Mission” by Roland Joffé in 1986. Joffé’s film also won the palm, turning De Niro into the rare actor of two winners of Palma d’o winners.
Although De Niro helps direct his own film festival in New York, The Tribeca FestivalHe has continued to be a pillar in Cannes. He presided over the jury in 2011 who selected “The Tree of Life” of Terrence Malick for La Palma. More recently, he and Scorsese returned to the premiere “Killers of the Flower Moon” in 2023.
“I have such narrow feelings for the Cannes Festival,” said De Niro when his honorary Palma d’Or was announced last month. “Especially now, when there is so much in the world separating, Cannes gathers us: narrators, filmmakers, fans and friends. It’s like returning home.”
De Niro will receive the award at the Festival’s opening ceremony on May 13.
