Cannes, France – One hundred years later Charlie Chaplin He made dinner dance and eat his shoe as if it were a good meal, “The Gold Rush” has been vividly returned in a new restoration that premiered on Tuesday in the Cannes Film Festival.
In it Opening day of its 78th edition, Cannes debuted a 4K restoration of “The Gold Rush”, one of Chaplin’s most beloved masterpieces. The projection, held just before the official opening ceremony of the festival, was part of a new tradition of the day for restored films, said the director of the Thierry Fremaux festival before the projection at the Debussy theater in Cannes.
Years in creation, this “gold fever” pristinely restores Chaplin’s vagabond to all his oppressed glory. The Border Comedy of Alaska of 1925 can be marking its centenary, but it seems very fresh in the restoration carried out by the Cineteca Di Bologna.
The restoration was more complicated than most because it included an extensive search for any missing footage. In 1942, Chaplin published the film and relaunched it with sound, music and narration effects. That version achieved two Oscar nominations, but the restoration sought to approach as much as possible to the original 1925.
In “The Gold Rush”, Chaplin’s lonely prospectr leaves through Alaska’s wild snow in the search for less gold than some food and maybe company. Their anticipated struggles of cliffs constitute much of the skillful slap of the film, but the humble and humble hope of romance greatly exceed their rich ambitions on strike.
The premiere of the film attracted two grandchildren of Chaplin: Kiera Chaplin and Spencer Chaplin.
“What about ‘gold fever?’ Spencer Chaplin said.
The projection in Cannes drew a full house in one of the largest theaters in Cannes, a crowd that Chaplin’s descendants surveyed hot.
“Our grandfather would really be proud to see this, a hundred years later, to see everything you here and interested in watching the movie,” said Kiera Chaplin.
“The Gold Rush” will be released in cinemas around the world on June 26 in a launch organized by MK2 Films.
