Atlanta – A federal expert panel on Wednesday recommended an expansion of RSV vaccines for adults and a new combination fired as another option to protect adolescents against meningitis.
The Immunization Practices Advisory Committee also voted to recommend an opportunity to protect travelers from a disease -transmitted disease called Chikungunya.
But it is not clear who will decide whether to accept those recommendations.
The 15 -member expert panel makes recommendations to the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on how vaccines cleaned by the regulator should be used. The CDC directors almost always approve the recommendations.
The Trump administration called Susan Monarez as director of the CDC in January in January, and last month he chose her To lead the agency. But while waiting for the Senate’s confirmation, it has essentially been challenged from regular duties due to federal law around vacancies, according to two CDC officials who speak under anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the agency’s issues and feared to be fired.
That means that any recommendation of the committee made on Wednesday can move to the Secretary of Health of the United States, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a main voice in the United States Anti -Cuna Movement.
A spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services told Associated Press that he was investigating how the agency would decide panel recommendations.
Those recommendations on Wednesday were:
– People 50 to 59 should be able to get vaccinated against the respiratory syncitial virus have risks that include heart disease, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder.
– Endorsement of a new combination of combination made by GSK that protects against five strains of meningococcal bacteria, including a tension that caused a series of outbreaks on university campuses about 10 years ago. It would join other products that also go to germs.
– Add a second Chikungunya vaccine to the options for Americans over 12 years old traveling to countries where sprouts occur. Around 100 to 200 cases are reported annually among American travelers.
– Add a new precaution for the oldest Chikungunya vaccine that weakened but alive viruses: people 65 or more should weigh the risks of the benefits of that version of the shot, the panel said. The precaution was added after the members of the panel learned of an investigation into six reports of people over 65, most of them with other medical problems, who became ill with heart or brain symptoms less than a week after vaccination. The investigation continues.
