Boston – Rafael Devers is the designated batter of Boston’s red socks.
And is not interested in another position switch.
Talking to journalists for the first time since Triston Casas was discarded for the season after breaking the tendon of the left knee and undergoing surgery, Devers said Thursday that the Management of the Red Sox approached him about the idea of replacing him as the first Boston base.
The three-time All-Star does not see it in his best interest to make another change of position after he is asked to move from the third base to DH during spring training after the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to play third.
“They came to me and spoke to me about it,” said Devers after home run and driving in two in Boston’s 5-0 victory over Texas.
“I know I am a ball player, but at the same time, they can’t expect each position to play.
Devers, who signed a $ 311 million and 11 -year -old contract to keep Boston in January 2021, said he spoke with the baseball officer of the Red Sox, Craig Breslow, about the possibility of playing first in the absence of houses.
For now, Boston is filling the first base place with a squad with Romy González and Abraham Toro.
“He (Breslow) played ball. I would like to think that he knows that changing positions is not easy,” said Devers through the interpreter of the Red Sox Daveson Pérez.
“They put me in this situation. They told me they didn’t want me to play in any other position.”
Devers offered a suggestion to Breslow, who launched 12 seasons of the Major Leagues and was a key member of the Boston Bullpen when the team won the World Series in 2013. Breslow is in its second season leading the department of baseball operations of the red socks.
“Now, they should do their job essentially and get to the market and look for another player. I’m not sure why they want it to be an intermediary,” said Devers. “The next thing you know is that someone in the garden hurts and wants me to play in the garden. I know the type of player I am and that is where I am.”
When asked about changing his mind in case the Red Sox receives little production from the current group of the first base, Devers reiterated that it is a full -time DH.
He also declared that he was upset because Boston would consider him to assume a position in which he has registered zero tickets as a great light.
“They told me that I am a bit careful, but they already asked me to change (positions) once. This time, I don’t think it can be so flexible,” said Devers. “I don’t think they were faithful to their word. They told me that I was going to play this position, Dh. Now they will return to that.”
