Retail sales increased only 0.2% in February, a small rebound after a strong drop of 1.2% in January, the trade department said Monday. Sales increased in grocery stores, household stores and gardens and retailers online. Sales fell into car distributors, restaurants and electronics stores.
The small increase suggests that Americans may be increasingly cautious about spending, since the stock market has collapsed and the tariff threats of President Donald Trump and the cuts of government expenses have led to great uncertainty between consumers and companies.
On Friday, a measure of consumer’s feeling fell sharply for the third consecutive month and has now decreased more than 20% since December. The respondents of the Michigan University Survey cited political uncertainty as a main reason for the most gloomy perspective. Although the respondents were abruptly divided by the party, the feeling of the current economy fell among the Republicans for much less than for the Democrats, the confidence of the Republicans in the future of the economy fell by 10%.
