Freeport, Texas – A chlorine leak in a Texas chemical plant on Tuesday led officials to ask residents in two Texas cities near the facilities that take refuge in their place.
The chlorine gas was released around 9 am from a plant in Freeport that is owned by Olin Corp., according to armsport fall, an organization that provides communication between residents and petrochemical industries in the area. Freeport is about 60 miles (97 kilometers) south of Houston.
The authorities announced that the escape had stopped around 9:45 am
A refuge application was issued in place shortly after the escape occurred as a precaution for residents in Clute and Lake Jackson, authorities said. The application for refuge in its place was built around 10:40 am
It was not known immediately if there were injuries due to the escape.
“The state of chlorine escape has been contained and everything clear has been issued,” said Lake Jackson Police Department on social networks.
Olin, based in Clayton, Missouri, did not immediately respond to an email in search of comments.
