Émilie Dequenne, the Belgian actor who won a top Cannes Film Festival The prize for its role as rupture in “Rosetta” has died, according to a news report. She was 43 years old.
His family and agent told the Agency France-Presse news agency that Dequenne died on Sunday of rare cancer in a hospital outside Paris. In 2023, Dequenne revealed that she had been diagnosed with adrenocortical carcinoma. Dequenne’s representatives did not immediately respond to Associated Press’s consultations on Monday.
Dequenne was only 18 when she was selected as best actress in Cannes in 1999. In “Rosetta”, Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, he portrayed a teenager who tried to escape his difficult life in a caravan park with an alcoholic mother. The film also won the Golden Palm that year.
Born in Belœil, Belgium, in 1981, Dequenne had a performance streak from an early age. He studied drama at the Musique de Baudour academic.
Became known in France after starring Catherine Deneuve In “The Girl on the Train”, in 2009, based on the real story of a woman who falsely affirmed that she was the victim of an anti -Semitic attack. Dequenne also portrayed Police officer Laurence Renauld in the French series “The Missing.”

Speaking to The Guardian in 2013 about the difficult role in “Our children,” he said: “For my part, I went home every weekend and I stayed with my family, which is a very safe place. Making a movie like that is something that you have to survive.”
More recently, she co -starred “Near,” Lukas Dhont’s tender childhood drama, which brought her back to Cannes again in 2022. He saw similarities between her young co -star and her own “Rosetta” role.
“For me to be here and return here after 23 years, it is very emotional and it is like a reflection between Eden (Dambrine) and I because I remember when I was here the first time with ‘Rosetta,'” he told The Associated Press. “It was like a very powerful movie with this main character, which is in each scene, each one. And that is the same for him.”
Dequenne returned to the festival again in 2024 for the 25th anniversary of “Rosetta”. His last film was the post-apocalyptic thriller of Frédéric Jardin “Survive”, which came out earlier this year.
While he loved to assume work in England, France and Belgium, he had little interest in Hollywood.
“I’ve been in Hollywood and I had meetings, but they don’t really make the kind of movies I like to make. And everything is boring, right?” He said in the interview with The Guardian. “Honestly, it is not a fun place, or at least it is not my type of fun.”
Her husband, director and producer Michel Ferracci, and her daughter, Milla Savareare survive.
