Baldwin Park, California – An officer was killed and another wounded while responding to a report by a man shooting rounds with a rifle and an injured man and not responding on the sidewalk on a city east of Los Angeles, authorities said on Sunday.
When the officers arrived at the scene on Saturday night, they were known for shots, “and at least one officer returned the fire, said the Sheriff of Los Angeles, Robert Luna.
A suspect of adult men was injured, but was arrested, said the department of the Sheriff of Los Angeles. The man, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital and was stable on Sunday, the department said in a statement.
The authorities identified the officer killed as Samuel Riveros on Sunday. The man found wounded on the sidewalk was taken to a hospital where he died. His identity is retained waiting for Kin’s notification, said the department of the Los Angeles County Sheriff.
The Police Chief of Luna and Baldwin Park, Robert López, held a press conference shortly after the shooting.
López said the officer who was killed was an “incredible man” who liked snowboarding and was traveling to see Dodger games throughout the United States.
The injured officer is in good condition and with his family, he added.
“It’s extremely tragic having to deal with this,” López said.
It is not clear how many shots were shot, but the weapon used in the shooting has been recovered, authorities said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department is investigating the incident as a double homicide.
